Haltwhistle has been shortlisted in the 2026 World Cup of Stations.
The theme for this year's competition is "stations creating connections that matter". We are proud of the work we have undertaken, and continue to do, to create a vibrant and welcoming space for the community, rail passengers and visitors to the area.
Transformation of the redundant railway buildings, providing offices and studios for small businesses, and the improvements in the waiting areas made such a difference to the station. The café created in the former Water Tower is used by locals, train passengers, for people waiting for the AD122 and 681 buses and visitors to the area.
The monthly makers markets provide an outlet for local crafters and food producers whilst helping people to support the local economy by shopping locally.

The colourful and informative exhibitions in the waiting rooms are appreciated by passengers and visitors. The local groups involved in creating the various exhibitions in Platform 1's waiting room have learned so much about the area during their research about local dogs, local history and local food. Platform 2's waiting room features Hadrian's Wall, its local attrctions, an ideas for connectivity from the station to the Wall - bus, walking or electric bike.
Education trips to Old Booking Hall allow schoolchildren to learn about rail safety, rail heritage, train tickets, sustainability and the opportunities provided by rail travel. The Old Booking Hall is also used by the community for meetings, exhibitions, art classes and talks.
Visitors to Haltwhistle during the Heritage Open Day event get the opportunity to visit the former signal box to learn about signalling from volunteers whilst enjoying a bird's eye view of the platforms.
