During the pilot project of Hadrian’s Wall Youth Ambassadors, young people explored UNESCO’s sustainable development goals. Being based in the fragile environment of the Hadrian’s Wall corridor, the young people fully supported UNESCO’s desire that, where possible, transport to and within a World Heritage Site should be sustainable. They asked, ‘Why can’t we have a leaflet, a map, to point to the World Heritage Sites easily accessible by rail?’

Their aspiration, became our inspiration to demonstrate how sustainable rail travel can be used to visit World Heritage Sites  in the United Kingdom.

With the support of World Heritage UK, CrossCountry Trains, Community Rail Network and TransPennine Express, we have produced a leaflet featuring the UK's World Heritage Sites, providing a map of how the rail network allows people to explore them using sustainable transport.

The leaflet was launched at Newcastle Central Station on 18 April, when representatives of CrossCountry Trains and World Heritage UK joined our team, handing out copies of the leaflet to rail passengers.  Our Director, Patrick Rice, created this video about the launch and the leaflet.

We have been amazed the global reach of this project, and have created this map to illustrate where it has been viewedFlipbook map

As transport is the largest emitting sector of greenhouse gases in the UK at about 27% of domestic emissions, we support the use of sustainable travel..Using rail travel rather than the car can make a beneficial impact on our environment.
