The creativity of people in our local communities has transformed the interior of the waiting room on Platform 1 at Haltwhistle Station as they have researched, and helped to produce interesting contents for a series of exhibitions illustrating that Haltwhistle is Something Special.
The first exhibition entitled "Something to bark about" was all about dogs. Not only did it provide information about local breeds, it included a wonderful collage of dogs residing in Haltwhistle.
A booklet featuring all the posters is now available to buy in the Water Tower cafe adjacent to the railway station
In summer 2023, the second exhibition was unveiled featuring the history and heritage of Haltwhistle and surrounding parishes. The researchers had compiled a wealth of information, much of it unknown to visitors to the station, a truly amazing reflection of the area over the centuries.
Unveiled in Febnruary 2025, the third exhibition has been researched by local group Zig Zag and is all about local food. Entitled What's for Tea, the colourful display provides lots of information about some of our foody favourites including sausages, honey, bread, beer as well as features about allotments, foraging, foodbanks and buying local. It is well worth a visit to station to learn more.
Zig Zag have produced some lovely tea towels and aprons featuring the Whats for Tea logo, which are now on sale in the Water Tower. Proceeds from the sale of the tea towels and aprons will support the future activity of the group.
The support of rail industry parners, CrossCounty, Northern and Community Rail Network is acknowledged in helping the community provide wonderful exhibitions to welcome people to the town and to illustrate why Haltwhistle is Something Special.
