The Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership (TVCRP) is exploring the possibility of staging Commemoration Event(s) to remember the 1939/1940 World war Two evacuations of women and children from the Tyneside industrial conurbation to the relative safety of rural Tynedale. TVCRP has teamed up with Wallsend Local History Society to identify interest particularly those who were involved both from Tyneside and the receiving towns of Haltwhistle, Brampton and the surrounding villages.

Brampton (Cumbria) is a station on the Newcastle – Carlisle line. For many years it was known as Brampton Junction, as when the line was built the Earl of Carlisle did not want the railway going anywhere near his property so this rural station is rather remote and was linked to Brampton Town by a short branch line. This closed as long ago as 1923, and is now a footpath. Brampton is managed by Northern and has a two hourly train service, but it is hoped this will be improved in subsequent timetable changes.

As part of the franchise agreement Northern and the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership have appointed Station Ambassadors, a group of volunteers who will look after their stations and make them look attractive for the passengers. Ambassadors have recently been appointed at Blaydon and already have begun to make their presence felt.

Taking the Railway to the Community in the Tyne Valley.

The last few weeks have been very busy for the volunteers of the Tyne Valley Community Rail Partnership, as they promote the Tyne Valley Railway and the operator Northern.

Last month the TVCRP took part in Community Rail in the City at Glasgow Central Station. Our Tourism Intern, Matthew Barrett, constructed a model of the Roman Wall which was painted by the Platform Painters of Haltwhistle. As the Tyne Valley Railway runs through Hadrian's Wall Country, it seemed such a waste to use this wall for only one event, it has been adapted and has now been used on several occasions to promote the railway and several Hadrian's Wall attractions.

Very positive news being received by users of the re-opened Hexham kiosk this morning by Journey Enterprises. The kiosk will be termed the 'Whistle Stop' and will be open Monday to Friday 7am-2pm.
