The sixty miles of railway line between Newcastle and Carlisle passes through a UNESCO World Heritage site, the homes of some of this country's industrial giants featuring the birthplace of steam railways, and borders both the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Northumberland National Park. Additionally several national long distance trails meet the railway including the pioneering Pennine Way.
