At the moment COGS is keeping a watching brief as the project goes through various processes at Northumberland County Council for the next stage of the scheme to move forward at a cost of £250,000.

COGS Aims

To improve the range of public transport available both to the residents of Gilsland and the surrounding area and to the many visitors who want to come to see the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site & the other attractions of the area.

To improve economic and social opportunities for the residents of the area.

To raise the level of the tourist experience for visitors to Gilsland and the surrounding area, in particular by researching and interpreting the heritage of thousands of years of human history here, in cooperation with the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines AONB.

COGS Objectives

To facilitate and oversee to completion the construction of the Gilsland Hadrian’s Wall Station near the site of the original railway station (closed in 1967). This lies on the main Tyne Valley line between Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne, on the Northumberland/Cumbria border and bisects the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail.

To encourage the development of a comprehensive array of tourism attractions in the area, particularly using the varied history of the area, and the appropriate marketing strategies.

To energise the local community to create or develop the local businesses that will be able to benefit from the increase in visitors to the area, both day and long-stay.
